Review: Matt & Kim w/Cut Copy @ Club Nokia 3.11.09

Until last night, I had been successful in my attempt at writing Cut Copy off as “another hipster dance trend” that I wouldn’t like and didn’t care about.  However, it’s kinda hard to pass up a show when:

  1. it’s free (my friend won tix from BeatCrave)
  2. it’s at a venue I’ve been meaning to check out (Club Nokia)
  3. I was supposed to review the band months ago at the Echo (except that LA Record couldn’t get me on the list and I’ve already established that I wasn’t a fan so why would I pay $15?)
  4. I actually do like the opening band (Matt & Kim)

So I went to the show and I’m really glad I did because:

  1. It was free (even though the GOLD wristbands were not yellow enough to get us into the pit.)
  2. Matt & Kim were awesome!  They missed no chance to tell the audience how excited they were to be up there and thanking everyone for listening.  (You’re welcome!  You guys look different without all the food on your faces)
  3. I’ve finally given Cut Copy a chance.  I have to say there was not a body in that room that wasn’t moving.  They really know how to get a crowd moving – and jumping.  Yes, jumping.  It’s been a while since I’ve had the energy or enthusiasm to jump, but somehow they brought it out in me.  And that says a lot.  Now I can honestly say that Cut Copy is “another hipster dance trend” that I like when I’m drunk and feel like dancing. And now I kind of care about them – if I get some more free tickets in the future.
  4. I probably burned enough calories dancing (and jumping) my booty off to cover all of the beer I drank (though I’m now gaining them all back by curing my semi-hangover with a glorious breakfast burrito from coffee table).

Sorry for the list format…it helped me organize my thoughts on this oh-so-fuzzy morning.
