I mentioned Mr. Gnome in my first Cool Judges post a couple weeks ago. Last night I finally got to see how they measured up live at the Silverlake Lounge in Los Angeles. When I first got there, I was wondering if I got the venue right. The crowd seemed pretty sparse considering the band had already completed four national tours and had been mentioned in numerous publications, including Paste Magazine and Rolling Stone. However, as Shane duly noted, the latter could actually hurt their chances at becoming popular in the uber-elitist hipster music scene of Silverlake. Nevertheless, I knew as soon as they played the first note that I was lucky to be witnessing their performance in such a small venue, before people start realizing their shows are worth attending.
Mr. Gnome kicked off the set with Rabbit, a song I consider to be one of the most solid tracks on their first full-length album, Deliver This Creature. As much as I have been digging the disc over the last couple months, seeing them perform it live blew me away. Nicole Barille’s intensely dynamic guitar playing and Sam Meister’s strong, intuitive beats brought me on a mystical journey through worlds of light and dark, eerily calm moments with sudden stabs of passionate insanity. I’m impressed that they could produce such a full sound between the two of them and even more impressed at the delivery. Overall, the show was awesome. The only thing lacking was the crowd, though I’m confident the next time around, people will be lining up around the block to get inside.
